Program Description

McKee Botanical Garden, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit cultural organization located at the southern gateway to Vero Beach, Florida, with the mission of "nurturing and enhancing a historic garden in a unique tropical setting for the education, enjoyment and enrichment of all."

The garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a historic Florida landmark. It has been endorsed by The Garden Conservancy as a project of National Significance and received the Florida Trust's "Outstanding Achievement in Landscape Architecture" in 2002.

The Garden receives support from individuals, foundations, and corporations and from income generated from admissions, gift shop sales, special events, and rentals. The Garden can be rented for weddings, dinner parties, receptions, ceremonies and other private events.

McKee Botanical Garden is known for its 18-acre subtropical jungle hammock, filled with plants appropriate for horticultural growing zone 9B. This dense and diverse collection also features several restored architectural treasures.

McKee Botanical Garden hosts a number of family-friendly events throughout the year that are open to the public. In 2012 the Garden launched a new program for children called Garden Discovery Backpacks which features age-appropriate backpacks centered around five themes: Garden Explorer, Things with Wings, It's a Bug's World, Plantastic, and Survival:Lost in the Jungle. Each backpack contains tools and educational materials designed to enhance the visiting experience of McKee's youngest nature enthusiasts. Backpacks can be checked out at Admissions for no additional cost.

The Garden also hosts Camp McKee each summer for children age 5-9. Campers enjoy wildlife demonstrations, nature walks, crafts and more. 2013 sessions are July 29 - Aug. 2 and Aug. 5-9, 8:30 am - 3 pm daily. Cost is $200/week and includes lunch daily plus snacks and activities.
