Program Description
Provides trained, volunteer tutors to instruct adults one-on-one. Instruction in basic reading and writing.
Also provides tutors for English to speakers of other languages.
One-on-one lessons are free, private, and confidential. They are held in a public facility (generally the library)and lessons can be conducted on any day of the week during the mornings, afternoons, or evenings.
Lessons are generally an hour to an hour and a half once or twice a week.
For kids and adults, an online phonics program is available.
Also, an online GED prep program for students interested in passing the GED test is available.
Conversational English classes are held two or three times a year.
The Sebastian office of Literacy Services is located in the North Indian River County Library, Sebastian Boulevard, Sebastian.
Volunteer tutors are always needed. Persons interested attend a ½ day workshop to learn how to use materials.
They then are matched with a student.
The tutor and student typically meet at either library 2 times a week for one hour to one and a half hours.
They will work at the student's pace to meet his/her goals.
